Test the sump pump
Test before spring rains; follow the model’s more frequent testing schedule too.
Why it matters
A pump that fails during heavy rain may not protect the lowest level of the home.
Steps
- Make sure the pit and inlet are clear of debris.
- Follow the manufacturer’s test method, often adding water to raise the float.
- Listen for normal operation and check that water discharges outside.
- Service the pump if it does not start, sounds abnormal, or cycles without removing water.
How often should I test the sump pump?
Yearly is the planning default. Follow your equipment instructions and act sooner on a fault.
