Do not step into standing water near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel. Leave the area and call emergency services or your utility if there is an immediate electrical, structural, or life-safety danger.
First steps
- Stop the water: Turn off the nearest fixture valve or the home’s main water shutoff. If you cannot do this safely, call a plumber or utility.
- Protect the area: Move people, pets, and valuables away. Use towels or containers only if the area is electrically safe.
- Document before cleanup: Take wide and close photos or video of the source and damage. Note the time you discovered it.
- Make the right calls: Contact a plumber or mitigation professional. Contact your insurer promptly about property damage and reporting requirements; do not wait for a final repair estimate.

- Do not discard damaged items before documenting them
