Do not flip switches, use a phone inside, light a flame, start a vehicle nearby, or do anything that could create a spark.
First steps
- Get outside: Leave the building without stopping to locate the leak. Move a safe distance away.
- Call from outside: Call 911 and your gas utility from a safe location. Follow their instructions.
- Keep others away: Do not let anyone re-enter or approach the suspected source.
- Wait for clearance: Return only after emergency responders or the utility say it is safe.
After the immediate problem
- Have qualified professionals repair and inspect the system
- Do not restore service yourself
- Document the incident after the area is safe
