Protect people first
If you smell gas, leave and follow the gas guide. For smoke or fire, leave and call 911. If indoor heat becomes unsafe, move to a cooler safe location; do not wait for repairs.
First steps
- Look at the thermostat: Note the room temperature, selected mode and target temperature. Check settings against your equipment instructions.
- Gather observations: Note when cooling stopped, any displayed error, unusual noise or visible water. Observe from a safe accessible location; do not remove equipment covers or touch wiring.
- Call an HVAC technician: Share the symptoms and model if readily available. Refrigerant, electrical faults and internal repairs need a qualified technician.
- Understand the proposed work: Ask for the diagnostic findings and a written repair estimate. Check equipment warranty or service-contract terms before authorizing nonurgent work.
After the immediate problem
- Save the diagnosis and service invoice
- Ask what maintenance your specific system needs
- If there is related property damage, ask your insurer about your policy; do not assume a breakdown is covered
